Practical Living through Biblical Principles

Faith Without Limits

Scripture: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” -Hebrews 11:1

I was on the phone with my mentor, like any other Tuesday evening. However, this particular time felt different. She listened patiently as I ran down my list of fears and anxieties concerning my future. When I finished talking, my mentor asked me a simple question that would change my perception on faith and my trust in God forever; “What are you trusting God for this week?” I realized that in all my time worrying about “what if”, I never created room for God to be God. That simple but powerful question brought to surface the hidden pain and trauma that were attached to this lack of faith that I was now made aware of.  This one question also brought up other reflecting questions such as “what is it that I believe or embraced from life experiences that is not aligned to God’s perfect will?” Was I trusting my history more than I was trusting God? A brilliant mind once said that when you don’t fully believe that God will fulfill his promise, you are standing in disbelief. Could it have been that my lack of faith had me standing in disbelief?!

As I sat there allowing God to fully unpack this “stuff” that I have allowed to limit my faith and ultimately limit God, deep down I knew that the only way to be free of the weight was to surrender it to God. I had to give God all my concerns, fears, worries, and disbelief that have accumulated from past pain and trauma. This meant me walking fully in my spiritual boldness and saying, “I trust you!”.  I can’t see what the end result will be, but Lord, I trust you! I know what the doctor said and what he/she said but Lord, I trust you!

I once was part of a Life Group with my church, and I remember the group leader teaching about surrendering to the grace of God. One thing she said was, “if you don’t live a life of complete surrender, you will continue to make decisions based on the reality of what you’ve lived.” Surrendering requires us to make the conscious decision to choose to walk by faith. My question to you is, what are you trusting God for this week?” There’s a song called “Oceans” by Hillsong. The lines at the end of the song say:

“Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders

Let me walk upon the waters

Whenever you would call me

Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander

And my faith would be made stronger

In the presence of my Savior”

As you let that simple question sink in, my prayer is that we will live in complete surrender and that our trust in God will be like the words in Hillsong’s song, without borders and unrestricted.
