Getting Back to “One Nation Under God”

By Yolanda K. Edwards

Revelation 2:19-29 – 19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first. 20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. 21 I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. 24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, 25 except to hold on to what you have until I come. 26 To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations 27 that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give that one the morning star. 29 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

United States CodeU.S. Code, or U.S.C.) is the official compilation and codification of the general and permanent federal statutes of the United States. It contains 52 titles, one of which is Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 4: The Pledge of Allegiance, officially adopted by Congress in 1945. However, there were 2 changes made in 1954, one of which was of utmost importance and that was to include the prepositional phrase “under God”.

In the Pledge of Allegiance, we pledge our allegiance as “one Nation under God, indivisible”.

It seems as though we have turned from “one nation under God” to “one nation in defiance of God” and as divided about many issues that face us today as we’ve ever been. Then we wonder why all of this turmoil is going on in the world today.

All of the destruction, devastation and turmoil that’s happening in the world today is not all the work of the enemy. Reading this passage in revelation reveals to us that God will bring His wrath to those who constantly sin against and defy him without repentance. As a nation we’ve given ourselves over to sexual immorality or we have accepted it as the norm, we have become a nation that murders one another without any remorse, we worship any and everything but God, we lie when the truth will do, we defame other people’s character and the list goes on and on.

But there is good news, this passage also reveals that God has compassion for those that walk up right before Him, meaning those that are saved and strive to die to sin every day and those who don’t fall into or accept patterns of sin as the norm. He will search our hearts to determine which side we fall on, His or the worlds. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. My prayer for you is that God will search your heart and see that you are on His side.

Prayer starter: Lord, please forgive me for the sins that I’ve committed against you through omission and commission. I want to strive to seek You first and to die to sin daily.  At the end of the day, I want to hear you say: “well done my good and faithful servant, in you I am well pleased”. I know that you are still working on me…

Hearing God’s Voice

By Yolanda K. Edwards

Matthew 6:6 – “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”

Psalm 46:10a – Be still, and know that I am God;
Do you desire to hear God’s voice? Are you wondering why He’s not speaking to you? Have you made Him a priority?

Some of us want so desperately to hear from God, but we don’t do what has to be done in order to hear Him speak to us.

The first thing we have to do is make Him a priority. We have to make a conscious decision to spend quiet time alone with Him. This means that you might have to give up your favorite TV show(s), you might have to go to bed earlier so you can get up a bit earlier, you might have to miss that meeting you thought wouldn’t go on without you. My point is, we get so busy and consumed with everyday life, that everything becomes a priority over God, whether it be consciously or subconsciously.

I challenge you to go to bed 30 minutes earlier at night and to get up 30 minutes earlier to spend time in His presence, praying and waiting for Him to speak to and in some cases, with you. Yes, God will have a conversation with you.

Prayer starter: Lord, thank you for giving me multiple opportunists to commune with you. Please show me how to carve time out of my individual schedule to spend some quiet time with you so that you may direct my path. From this day forward, I will make a conscious effort to make you a priority over everyone and everything in my life…

When Your Enemy is Your Friend

By Pastor Brenda Gray

Matthew 26:50 Friend, do what you came for.

There’s no pain like betrayal. And none of us is exempt. Psalms 41:9 says Even my close friend, someone I trusted, who shared my bread has turned against me.

The truth is, God allows certain people into our lives to facilitate His purposes. Even ones like Judas whom Jesus called friend, and said: “Do what you came for”. Before Jesus was betrayed, He told the disciples, “I know whom I have chosen…that the scripture may be fulfilled, “he who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me” (John 13:18). He could have fulfilled His destiny without John the beloved disciple, or impetuous Peter who was always ready to defend him, but it was Judas’s kiss of betrayal that ushered Jesus into His destiny.

You can’t always avoid getting hurt, but God can give you the grace to re-evaluate the situation and realize that the person you thought was your enemy may have been a friend in disguise. God will never permit His plans for us to be sabotaged by somebody elses action. When you are under His shield of protection, He’ll will only allow your Judas to go so far.

As a child of God, His purposes govern how much damage others can do to you. Once you understand that, it lessens the fear that stems from developing relationships again when you have been burned. Psalms 119:71 says, “It was good for me to be afflicted, so that I might learn your decrees.

God loves to turn our negatives into positives. And while none of us enjoys suffering, it takes us to levels of understanding that, left to our own devices, we’d never reach.

Prayer Starter: Father in the name of Jesus help me to understand the Judas in my life. Even though there is chaos all around me please keep me on the path that you have designed for me…

Subtle Sin with Major Consequences

By Yolanda K. Edwards

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. – John 10:10

Oftentimes, when we think about the words kill, steal, and destroy, we think about incidents that are immediately evident. Things that people are instantly aware of, like physical death, white-collar crimes (i.e. embezzlement), theft, or national catastrophes such as hurricanes, fires, or major destruction.

Though these things do occur, the enemy will sometimes introduce sin in subtle ways so we as Christians don’t realize what we are caught up in until it is too late and we find ourselves at a point where it is hard to get out or we are in need of some serious deliverance.

We have to be cognizant of the many ways the enemy will subtly introduce sin.  One is through the television.  You see, the enemy uses television to “tell-a-vision”.  Another way is though music…to tell a story and capture the minds of people, particularly our youth.  He uses media devices to subtly plant the idea of sin in our minds and subconscious.  Before you know it, we begin to overlook the sin we see on a daily basis.  Some of us might even find ourselves indulging in sin ourselves.

Let’s take a look at a few of the popular T.V. shows (Empire, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder).  Each of these shows subtly introduced homosexuality into our homes. Some of us have noticed, but have not really given it much thought. In some cases, we see it as no big deal.  We continue to watch the shows and overlook the sin as if it is okay.  Even if you were initially annoyed by it, you continue to watch the show and it becomes a norm, not just on television, but also in real life.

New flash…it’s not the norm, and it’s not okay.  The bible tells us in Leviticus 18.22 “Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.”  At what point does Christians say enough is enough and stand up for God’s word.

We’ve got to get to a point where the world’s norm is not our norm; to where we no longer conform to this world, but strive daily to renew our minds by reading and applying His word, that we may prove what is good, acceptable, and the perfect will of God.

Prayer Starter – Lord, I’ve struggled with overlooking subtle sinful acts and holding people accountable for committing those acts or living sinful life styles that are not pleasing to you.  I’ve over looked these things for so long, that I no longer think about the devastating consequences these sinful acts may have, even to the detriment of other’s salvation.  Lord, please forgive me.  Help me not to conform to this world, but renew my mind daily so that I may…

God’s Prescription for Keeping You Healthy

By Pastor Brenda Gray

Proverbs 4:20-22 “My son, give attention to my Words; Incline your ear to my saying. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh”.

Many people have had to get a prescription filled at some time or another. There are always instructions on the bottle of medicine that tell how to take it and how much to take. The bottle may read, take two tablets twice a day or take one tablet every four hours. If we don’t follow the instructions, we can get into trouble. We can take too much or not enough of the medicine. We must always take the prescription as prescribed by the physician. It will only be effective if it is taken properly.

We need to do the same thing with the prescription that God has written for us. The Word of God is like medicine for our body. We need to learn how to take God’s medicine so it can do its healing work in every area of our lives. The prescription is simple and is found in Proverbs 4:20-21. In these verses are 5 steps to taking the medicine of God’s Word.

My son, give attention to my Words (In other Words God is saying give your undivided attention to the Word of God and shut out everything around you with no interruptions).

Incline your ear to my sayings (God is saying to open your ears to the Words that he is speaking to you and to close them to everything Word that you hear that is contrary to his Word. Too many times we listen to other people. What is most important is what God says because when we listen to God we close out unbelief, fear and doubt).

Do not let them depart from your eyes (We must focus on what God’s Word says about our situation, not on a negative report or what circumstances say).

Keep them in the midst of your heart. (The Word won’t work for us if it’s only in our mind. We must get the Word down in our heart and when we achieve this we can boldly take what is rightfully ours. Then we will see Proverbs 4:22 come to pass in our life “For they (God’s Words) are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.”

Father in the name of Jesus I ask for forgiveness for not respecting your Word in the bad times and in the good times. Scripture tells me how to stay healed and live victoriously just as much as it tells me how to be healed and get out of difficulties. God please …
